Plywood trade leads
Plywood trade leads: qualify the enquiry before you price it
A practical framework for turning plywood trade leads into orders: the six fields that make a lead priceable, red flags, and a reusable brief.

Every trader knows the pattern: ten enquiries arrive, eight say some version of "best price 18mm ply", and by the time the details are extracted, the buyer has gone quiet. The problem usually isn't the lead source — it's that the lead was never qualified into something priceable.
The six fields that make a lead priceable
- Grade and standard. "Waterproof" is a marketing word; "BWP to IS 710" is a specification. Until the grade is pinned, any price quoted is a guess that will be renegotiated.
- Thickness and sheet size — with tolerance. A buyer who accepts 17.5 mm measured on a nominal 18 mm sheet is a different quote from one who will reject the truck.
- Core and face. Hardwood versus poplar core changes cost and screw-holding; face veneer quality changes what the sheet can be used for.
- Quantity and cadence. One hundred sheets once, or one hundred sheets monthly? The second lead is worth different pricing and different attention.
- Delivery and handling. Site location, unloading arrangement, and access determine freight — often the swing factor between competing quotes.
- Timeline and payment terms. A lead without a required-by date and a payment expectation is a conversation, not yet a deal.
Red flags worth respecting
- Round-number quantities with no application named — often a price-fishing exercise.
- Grade named without a standard ("marine ply" but resistance to putting IS 710 in writing).
- Urgency without logistics — "needed this week" but no site address.
Make the brief do the qualifying
The cheapest qualification tool is a structured brief the buyer fills in once. It filters casual price-fishing without offending serious buyers — serious buyers like being asked precise questions. Our free 13-line material brief template exists for exactly this, and the grade guide helps buyers answer the grade question correctly the first time.
Send a qualified requirement through the enquiry desk and it arrives with these fields already structured.
